Is a business card still relevant in today’s digital age?

The comment, “I don’t do business cards,” got me pondering. The person in question felt networking was all about building relationships, and there was no need for a card. That is an interesting perspective.

Yes, business is all about relationships, and networking is the first step towards creating that relationship.

In this age of digital everything, you might think the humble business card is obsolete. With devices at our fingertips, has a card gone the way of the dinosaurs and become extinct?

The short answer is NO!

Yes, it’s true we now have many ways to exchange contact information electronically, but business cards still have a place.

5 Reasons Business Cards Are Valuable

#1 – They provide a tangible and physical reminder.

In a world where we are bombarded with digital information and forgetfulness is common, having a physical reminder can be very helpful.

I write notes on the back of the cards to remember more about someone I’ve just met; it helps me personalise the follow-up.

I’ve also noticed that many business and tech-savvy entrepreneurs include a QR code on their business cards to facilitate digital access whilst also providing a physical reminder.

#2 – They are definitely more personal and memorable than a digital exchange.

You know the old saying, out of sight is out of mind? Well, when the exchange zaps digitally, it vanishes from sight. A hard copy card, will stay with you until you return to the office. Yes, you might decide to ditch it, but at least you take time to think about whether you want to connect with that individual.

#3 – The design, quality, and message are another way to reflect your brand and leave a lasting impression.

I first learnt about adding a photo many moons ago from a pioneering breast cancer advocate; her name was Veronica Macauley Cross. She explained, “It’s not about vanity. It’s about helping them remember me,” which changed my whole attitude to including my photo on correspondence, business cards and now on my social media.

Her methods worked; some 20 years later, I remember her exceptionally well and recall her face.

#4 – Not everyone is comfortable using technology. Many prefer to exchange business cards as it’s a comfortable and traditional way of exchanging contact details.

It’s also worth remembering that you can take a business card to places where electronic devices are not allowed, or it would be considered ill-mannered to whip out your phone to swap contacts.

#5 – In several cultures, exchanging business cards is essential to doing business and facilitating introductions. Being without a card is like being caught half-dressed.

You only have one chance to make a first impression – make it a good one!

Never underestimate the power of an old-fashioned, physical card. It’s a tangible reminder of your connection, and if you’ve added a personal touch like a photo, you’ll be remembered in a flash, outshining the digital noise.

  2. Business cards are also super handy to have available on a table at events! I know I personally will collect business cards when I’m out at markets or conventions, not everyone has the time to drum up a conversation or the battery life to keep plugging things into their phone so being able to grab a business card is great.
